Gearhart Wilderness, Oregon July, 2002 |
|
Our journey to Gearhart Wilderness in central Oregon started with a ride through meadows and woods and over the headwaters of the Sprague River. This river is clear and running full even in late July. |
|
Campbell and Dead Horse lakes were two other short side trips on our way to Gearhart Wilderness. These high lakes have camping sites available and were only at about 50% capacity. These are nice lakes that offer fishing, camping and solitude away from the valley below. |

At last we started our venture into the Wilderness. The trip started out
very gradual and ended with a more moderate climb.
Blue Lake is a fascinating lake with deadfall leading into the lake in many places. The fishing was also fantastic. The fish were hitting on black rooster-tails with gold spinners on them. The lake was just absolutely beautiful. Of course, there are always sacrifices....ours was the continuous onslaught of mosquitoes. They seemed to enjoy our mosquito repellant and Lori as a host. She wishes her fingernails were longer right now to kill the misery of those familiar red bumps. We had a fantastic time and would love to do it again. Maybe in late June next year. The mosquitoes might be a little easier on us then. |
