Back to Beautiful Wife   Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oregon 2003

And another great year of backpacking.  We had contemplated going into another wilderness or maybe even a new location in the Eagle Cap, but no, we enjoy not seeing many people while backpacking so we stayed with the same ol' place.  We woke up the first morning and explored the 'meadow.'  We estimate about 5-6 good campsites in this area.  From here there are trails up to Bear, Culver, Looking Glass, Eagle, Cached and other lakes.  We wanted to hike into Pop and Little Pop Lake's this year and were disappointed to find those trails long lost to vegetation overgrowth.  It would take some cross country excursions to see them now.

It gets a bit nippy in the evening and Lori was getting cold, so she had her hand in campfire building.

Oh yeah!  A nice fire.

This shot is of the lower Main Eagle area looking from the slopes of Needle Point.

We were headed toward the summit on this day hike.  The trip took us above Cached Lake and on toward the top of the range.

This is the view from the top of the Eagle Cap range.  We are camped far below and to the right of this picture.  The summit to the left is Needle Point, with Eagle Lake nesting in the canyon behind it.

We took an 11-mile hike on that day.  It was just beautiful.  The ridge in the background is where we had just come from.  On this entire backpacking trip we only saw five groups of people, which makes for a good back-woods 'get-away'.

Another great backpacking trip.  We realize we're getting older and also the need to stay in shape for these backcountry trips.  Our final word... "Exercise so we can have fun..."
