Earlier this year I was in distress because I didn't draw an elk tag.
Through some discussions with friends I was able to get involved in an elk
harvest in Chama, NM. There were four of us involved in the ranch
harvest. We stayed at the Elkhorn Lodge and had a nice dinner at one
of the local diners. It was rustic, as is the majority of the town.
This is an inside shot of my room at the lodge. It was very
comfortable.
The next morning we headed out from the ranch just as it was getting
daybreak. For those of you who eat what they harvest this is an
awesome picture. I shot downhill at around 100 yards and the bullet
went through and through just behind the left shoulder. No meat was
ruined.... awesome!
The ranchers not only gutted and loaded the elk for us, but also skinned
and quartered them. We placed the meat in game bags and they were
then ready to haul to the meat processing facility. We hauled all of
our meat back to Albuquerque so it would be easier to move from the
processing place to our freezers.
This is a shot of some of the herd they use as brood stock for the ranch.
It is much like running cattle except they have longer legs and like to
hide a lot....
