August 21st, 2011 trip to Holiday Mesa in New Mexico to look into some
ruins dating back to the early or late 1500's.
At the end of Holiday Mesa the cliffs drop off pretty steep.
Someone had built a nice campsite and even placed these heavy rocks to
make tables and chairs.
This tree had fallen over and pulled up rocks in it's roots. The color of
the root system and the rock just seemed odd and definitely needed it's
picture taken.
The ruins were huge and it is said it housed over 3000 rooms. The
mounds used to be rocks piled up supporting wooden poles for roofs.
We visited some missions in San Antonio last year that still had original
roofs. These ruins have definitely had some severe weather.
This was a very large room and it still had a portion of a wall still
standing.
We were thinking that possibly someone had excavated this wall. This
leaves a person to believe there are many walls under the mounds that
would tell where the specific rooms were.
The place was large there were pottery shards everywhere a person looked.
These pottery shards were fairly large and were already placed for a nice
picture. The larges piece was about 3 inches across and had some
nice painting on the side.
This section of the ruins looked to be newer. We don't know the
history of the site so it is unclear when these rooms were built.
But there seemed to be newer because the log poles for the roofs were
still somewhat in tact.
On the way back to the truck we took a different road and ran across this
logging camp. There were two or three of these cabin structures.
Hey ladies.... what's for dinner?
We had a great time and rode over 25 miles. We all got a little
more sun that planned, and we got lucky and missed the cloud burst back at
the truck location.
