2012 Silver City, NM - Visit with Todd
and Marcela
A friend invited me down to Silver City, NM for a weekend visit. I
got a late start on Saturday and on my way south on Interstate 25 I
noticed this odd looking vehicle up ahead. Turns out to be quite the
little joy rider. It was a little squirrelly at 75+ MPH.
This is a nice picture of the Gila Mountains. I haven't been to the
Gila Wilderness but I am told it is stunning. Maybe later this
summer....
Just before Silver City on highway 152 is this giant open pit copper mine.
The huge dump truck in the lower right corner looks pretty small compared
to the overall size of the mine.
Once at Todd's place there were some small deer wandering around the
properties. The closes one looks to be a little buck (forked horn).
Todd and Marcela. Todd cooked up some chickens stuffed with beer
cans. I tried this same effort the following weekend and it turned
out fantastic (nice and tender). It was nice to visit, as I haven't
visited much with Todd in about 18 years. Ouch, we can't let that
happen again.
Todd and Rick (me).
I left the next day around 10:30 and headed back over the same route.
I stopped along the lower Gila creek and took a few pictures. The
water is crystal clear and real cold. No, I didn't fall in... but I
did check to see just how cold it was.
Highway 152 is a crooked bugger. The three 20 MPH curves in the sign
doesn't do it justice.
And there are plenty of 10 and 15 MPH hairpin turns. There wasn't
much traffic which was nice.
I stopped off at Elephant Butte Reservoir to see about renting a fishing
boat some day. I didn't find anyone to rent me anything but I did get a
feel for the area.
Nice visit... got home in time to watch a little TV and mentally
prepare for the week.
